This blog is my way of providing information about my forthcoming book, The Research Game.
In this book I will describe the history of academic research, principally in the United States, and primarily at academic institutions or non-profit research institutes.
Research has been the significant aspect of my professional career since my first days at The Information Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California in 1990 until my retirement from Scripps Research in 2019.
Throughout this 30 year odyssey I was privileged to meet and know Internet Pioneers, Nobel Laureates, University Presidents, brilliant scientists, and senior executives. It was a very satisfying journey.
The Research Game will describe why academic research is so very different from any other industry in America -- its economics, rules, customs, mores, goals, successes and failures.
It is my hope that this blog will give its readers some insight into this amazing industry!
